The Environment Ministry’s Expert Appraisal committee has recommended that Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd. be granted environment clearance for its expansion project in Madurantakam, which is approximately 3.7 km from Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.

However, the Committee stated that the environment clearance will be subject to the judgement in a case against the company at National Green Tribunal and orders from any other court of justice.

It set forth conditions. The project proponent shall not manufacture banned chemicals. The unit shall not contain banned raw materials. The project proponent shall adhere to the notifications/guidelines of the government in this regard, it said.

The Committee ordered the company to look into the possibility of recycling or reusing treated water in order to reduce freshwater consumption.[Sun Pharmaceuticals]Zero liquid discharge shall be guaranteed and no untreated wastewater shall be released outside the premises.

The company informed the Committee that the expansion would take place on existing land measuring 64,688.76m2. The project cost would amount to 202.36 million, which includes an existing investment of 173.36 crore. However, the company had allocated 1.49 crore for pollution control measures.

The company also stated that its total water consumption after expansion would be 286.5 Kilolitres per Day (KLD), which includes 182 KLD freshwater. According to the company, the effluents will be treated at an existing treatment facility, which is based on the zero liquid emission system.

TheCommittee also suggested that toxicand explosive products and raw materials be stored with the utmost precautions, in compliance with safety norms, and following the best practices.
