Pune: The state environment minister Aaditya Thckeray stated that the main steps to save the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Yerawada were to take action against illegal activities, strengthen police security and install more CCTV cameras.
He suggested that residents and NGOs should organize a cleanliness drive every other day. Thackeray reported that the debris was removed from the proposed sanctuary area. He also said that the matter regarding a portion of the land, which is subject to litigation, would be investigated and conservation activities would be undertaken in the area.
Thackeray spoke with residents and activists who have been fighting to conserve the area for many years. He said that efforts will be made for the transfer of the land parcel in the possession the revenue department to to the forest department, so that better conservation measures can be implemented to ensure that the birds have a safe home.
Thackeray stated, “For the past two years, the state government tried to save the forest reserve in Maharashtra. It is crucial to protect biodiversity to ensure that living organisms can have a safe haven. In this direction, we have decided to take legal action against those involved in illegal activities and also strengthen security.
He stated that the sanctuary would be open to all citizens who wish to see its beauty. Thackeray appealed at the citizens to plant more trees in Pune to make it a greener city. He was accompanied by Vadgaonsheri MLA Sunil Tingre, and other members.
