The global skin care brand dermalogica has introduced a mono-material pump packaging design that can reduce waste while increasing recyclability

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1, 2022/PRNewswire/ “The beauty sector has a problem with its pump,” says Aurelian Lis, chief executive officer at Dermalogica. “Pumps are more commonly used, but not widely sustainable. We are working to solve the problem.

Dermalogica will start to incorporate recyclable pumps into its top-selling facial cleansers in 2022. Most pumps on market are made of plastic. However, they contain an internal metal spring which makes them difficult to recycle. Dermalogica’s mono-material pump is composed of a plastic spring. It is recyclable polyethylene and can be disposed of as one unit by placing it in the recycling bin. The new pump is lighter in weight and uses less virgin plastic, which means that it has a lower demand for a non-renewable resource. Dermalogica is now closer to its goal to have 100% of its bottles recycled, composted or reused by 2025 with this new packaging solution.

Aptar, an industry leader in packaging, was partnered by Dermalogica to create the recyclable, customized pumps. Aptar develops, designs, and innovates products with people and the environment in mind. The innovative, cutting-edge pump solution has received numerous industry certifications for the application of eco-design principles. It has also been recognized by the Association of Plastics Recyclers Meets Prefer Guidance Program and RecyClass. RecyClass is an inter-industry initiative focusing on harmonized, recyclable products. Dermalogica is a skincare brand that has integrated the pumps into its packaging. This allows for a more seamless recycling experience, both for customers and professionals.

Lis says, “As an industry leader, we have an obligation and an opportunity to make positive impacts, not just on people’s skin, but also on our environment.” The fact that we were the first major skincare brand in the world to launch these mono-material, recyclable pumps puts pressure on others to follow our lead and innovate for the planet.

A recent study* showed that nearly 3 in 4 women (74%) say sustainability is a must-have when it comes to self-care products, yet there is often confusion on how to responsibly recycle. A mere 50% of women say that they would recycle self care products. However, 42% of women would just throw away a product if they didn’t know if it was recyclable. Dermalogica’s monomaterial packaging solution ensures that all parts of the package can be recycled easily and without any confusion.

As part of Dermalogica’s ongoing Healthy Skin and a Healthy PlanetDermalogica also introduces new bottles made with 50% post-consumer recycling (PCR) resin plastic. Dermalogica began rolling out half-sized PCR bottles in 2021. The company plans to expand this PCR integration to full-size cleansers by 2025. The mono-material pump is expected to be available in 2022. www.dermalogica.com/sustainability.
