The whole development is designed to create tranquil, natural surroundings and protect and enhance the surrounding environment.
The building is extremely sustainable. The grounds include ancient woodland, designated as a Site Of Importance For Nature Conservation (SINC).
The Oaks Crematorium was founded in 2013 with sustainability in mind.
The grounds include a natural lake and wildflower meadow, with active beehives, bird boxes, and hedgehog houses.
This has helped local wildlife thrive. Surveys have revealed that there are more than 100 species of botanical plants in the area. The meadow provides a great habitat for bees, grasshoppers, and butterflies and also provides cover and foraging opportunities to small mammals.
Southern Co-op is the independent co-operative formed in Portsmouth over 150 years ago that owns and manages The Oaks Crematorium.
Gemma Lacey (Southern Co-ops director for sustainability and communications) said that Southern Co-op was founded with a purpose beyond profit and works for the benefit of communities and the environment. This is important for our members and a key part of our cooperative difference.
Southern Co-op has partnered with The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust in order to ensure that The Oaks Crematorium is a positive influence on the local environment and wildlife.
This involved the sensitive clearing of the pond and the planting of native woodland flowers as well as marginal pond species such flag iris.
Gemma stated that they helped us to understand the flora and fauna of the area and helped us to create an action plan to improve the habitats so that we can encourage more wildlife. Surveys have shown an increase in biodiversity on the site.
The crematorium building is also built to the highest environmental standards.
Low-level, efficient lighting reduces light pollution. There is also a sustainable heating/cooling system.
Gemma explained that the main chapel uses passive ventilation. This means that cool, fresh air is drawn in at low levels on the eastern side (pre-warmed during cooler months) and expelled at high levels on the western side. We also have solar panels installed to help reduce our electricity consumption as well as our carbon footprint.
It has been a hit with visitors, clients, and members alike.
Gemma stated that it offers a different experience than many other crematoria. People love being able spend time in a serene and natural setting.
The natural environment enhances the experience. It is a peaceful and beautiful place to remember loved ones and spend time in peace.
