The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to (MoU). This MoU will support the ‘Majhi Vasundhara’ campaign, which is an initiative that focuses on the energy and environmental aspects of sustainable development.

UN office released a statement on Saturday saying that the “beginning of a new partner between UN Environment Programme, the Government of Maharashtra will assist the state in implementing climate change mitigation-adaptation measures.” Friday saw the signing of the MoU.

“Majhi Vasundhara” (literally, My Earth), is an initiative of Government of Maharashtra’s Environment and Climate Change Department to empower citizens with information on climate change and encourage them towards improving the environment.

Aditya Thackeray (Cabinet Minister of Tourism, Environment and Protocol) spoke on behalf of the government in Maharashtra. She said that “We should begin to consider all avenues to get towards Net Zero at the earliest.” Maharashtra will be evaluating the investment opportunities needed to steer Maharashtra’s economy towards net zero in the coming months. We must act now.

UNEP will assist the state in teaching and mobilizing youth on marine litter and plastic pollution through UNEP’s Tide Turner Challenge. This challenge is open to all educational institutions in Maharashtra. UNEP will assist the Maharashtra government with various clean energy projects and in developing a strategy to achieve carbon-neutral development, in accordance with the Government of India’s vision.

Maharashtra is the right time to lead the clean energy transition, with its recent renewable energy policies being an important step.

The industry is seeing opportunities in clean energy and sustainability. This can open the door for the industry and the financing opportunities that are available. “There is a global trend where frontrunners are occupying niches in different markets, and not just in the energy industry, but also in transport, agriculture, chemicals, buildings, construction, textiles, and those taking advantage what a circular economy can offer. Sheila Aggarwal Khan, Director, Economy Division, UNEP said Maharashtra is well-positioned to benefit from this transition.

“In this Decade of Action to reach the Sustainable Development Goals we are happy to see this collaboration among UN Environment Programme as a Member of the UN Country Team in India, and the Government of Maharashtra. It will help teach climate consciousness, green values, and climate awareness across communities and particularly the youth. This is an important step in enhancing sustainable interaction between peoples, their environment, and aligning respect for the Earth and prosperity,” Shombi Smart, UN Resident Coordinator, India, stated.

The UNEP is the world’s leading voice on the environment. It is a leader and encourages collaboration in caring for the environment. It inspires, informs and empowers nations and peoples to improve quality of life without compromising future generations.
