The United Nations Environment Programme and The Energy and Resources Institute have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This MoU aligns with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It promotes green technologies, advances cutting-edge policies and builds capacity to address humankind’s environmental problems.

The UNEP and TERI will collaborate to promote the common goal of science-based solutions to environmental problems. Multiple initiatives will be undertaken under the MoU, according to the UNEP.

These initiatives include providing the most recent and relevant findings and research on environmental innovation; supporting frontier assessment of innovations, including cutting edge technologies and nature-based solution solutions; and developing data infrastructure and standards to manage, collect, disseminate, and analyze environmental information to provide insight into decision-making processes.

The MoU, which was signed on February 18, envisages joint assessments, undertaking scanning processes to find the most environmentally friendly technologies and determining the necessary enabling conditions (including governance), to allow for scaling at the local and national levels.

TERI is a policy-research institute that aims at creating innovative solutions in energy and the environment. UNEP is mandated to provide timely, scientifically sound, and policy-relevant environmental assessment for decision-making in order to advance the 2030 Agenda.

A draft study was presented last year at the ‘Roundtable Dialogue on Responsible Consumption and Production’. It was conducted under a collaborative initiative of UNEP, SWITCH Asia and TERI. The study suggested that India “strengthen data surveillance and reporting to showcase India’s progress in achieving sustainable production and consumption.”
