The emerging Green finance sector will play a crucial role in protecting the environment worldwide.

A large number Indian youth are driving and leading various green initiatives across the country. Prince Charles Trust released a study in 2021 that showed that 85% of Indian youth want to pursue green jobs. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, ranked No.3 by Times Higher Educations Young University Rankings 20,22, offers a BSc (BSc) in Sustainable and Green Finance. This program teaches students how to solve environmental problems beyond the scope of a single discipline.

A career in sustainability requires more than pursuing a degree. HKUST has been working hard to create a sustainable culture by embedding sustainability into its curriculum and operations.  The University has been working with governments to address local and regional air pollution issues, in addition to setting ambitious energy consumption targets.

More than 90% of HKUST undergraduates graduate from sustainability courses. There are many funding options, including Sustainable Smart Campus as a Live Lab (SSC), and Incentive Schemes for Net-Zero Carbon Research Projects. These programs encourage students to think up innovative ideas and put them into practice.  Many faculty and students eventually develop their own technology and solutions to global problems.  These include mobile apps that allow users to analyse and manage their air pollution exposure and health risks. There are algorithms that analyse and forecast the effects of climate change on corporations, and they also propose sustainable business models.

A brief description of the Sustainable and Green Finance program (SGFN).

  • The interdisciplinary SGFN program is jointly offered by the School of Business and Management and Division of Environment and Sustainability at HKUST. It is designed to develop leaders in Environmental, Social, and Governance, Impact Investment, Sustainable and Green Project Financing, Sustainable and Green Instrument and Product Development, and other related areas.
  • Students must study a wide variety of subjects in multiple disciplines, including ESG investment, sustainable supply chain management and green business strategy. It will also allow students to have a global outlook.
  • The Program is taught and managed by highly qualified faculty members.  These connections allow for many practical and enriching cocurricular activities. The Fall 2022 will see the first intake of the inaugural four-year program.

India and Beyond: Career prospects

Not only is the concept of sustainable development and ecological sustainability gaining popularity in India but all over the globe, Indian companies are more interested in conducting investment and research in sustainable and ecological development. The field is growing daily.

Indian government employs many sustainability graduates, including those from the Forest and Environment Department, Pollution Control Board, Waste Treatment Industries, Agriculture Industry, Refineries, Mines, Fertilizer Plants, Urban Planning Commission, distilleries, and food processor industries. Governments and major corporations around the globe are also interested in students of these disciplines, especially since China and many other Asian countries are striving to achieve ambitious carbon neutrality goals in the future.
