UNESCO stops environmental monitoring inspections of Russia’s Lake Baikal by Ecology Ministry

Moscow [Russia]ANI/Sputnik, 28 February (ANI/Sputnik), UNESCO announced Monday that it had decided to withdraw Susanna Karai, its envoy, from the Russian region of Irkutsk. It did so by cancelling an environmental monitoring mission of Lake Baikal. This is a World Heritage Site. The joint monitoring mission of UNESCO (IUCN), and International Union for Conservation of Nature is cancelled. In the next few days, the international expert who arrived in Irkutsk Region will be leaving the region. Susanna Karai will visit the World Heritage site, where she will discuss the issues with the Russian delegation. The ministry said that these consultations would not take place during a mission.

The mission to assess negative environmental repercussions on Lake Baikal was set to take place between February 28th and March 5. It was expected to submit its inspection results to the 45th UNESCO conference, which is scheduled for June 2022 in Kazan.
