ASSOCIATE PERFESSOR / PROFESSOR (1 Post)

The University of Pretoria is seeking an academic staff member to strengthen the research and teaching capacities in the Department of Chemical Engineering. It also wants to position the Department as an international leader. Experience and expertise in chemical engineering are required, particularly in the area of Process design, modeling, control and optimization. This position will closely associate with multidisciplinary research in the application of process design, model, control, and optimization in sustainable environment and water use processes, sustainable and efficiently energy processes, engineering, advanced and applied materials, and engineering.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

It is expected that the successful candidate will:

  • Teach core modules of chemical engineering (e.g. Process control, process dynamics and process synthesis are some of the core modules in chemical engineering.
  • Supervise undergraduate students in their final year and supervise postgraduate Honours, Masters, and PhD students who are engaged in research in process systems engineering, control, modelling, and optimization, artificial intelligence, and applications in chemical engineering processes.
  • You will lead a research group that focuses on process systems engineering, modelling, optimisation, multivariable controls system theory and design, artificial intelligent in sustainable environments and water utilisation processes.
  • Manage and raise additional funding from industry and national funding agencies to support his/her research activities as well as those of the unit/group he/she associates with the Department.
  • Expand existing research programs or start new ones in process systems engineering, modelling and optimization, multivariable control system theory, design, artificial intelligence.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Associate Professor

  • A BEng/BSc. (Eng. degree in Chemical Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline from a university of which the undergraduate programme is registrable with ECSA;
  • A Masters degree in Chemical Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline with a focus on process systems engineering, process control instrumentation Engineering, process modelling and optimisation, that follows on the previous qualification;
  • A PhD degree in in Chemical Engineering/Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline with a focus on process systems engineering, process control instrumentation Engineering, process modelling and optimisation that follows on the previous qualification;
  • Expertise in the application of concept design, -modelling and -control in environmental engineering, sustainable energie processes, advanced and applied materials.
  • Minimum of six years’ experience in an industry or tertiary academic institution.
  • A record of undergraduate and/or doctoral teaching experience, including supervision and supervision of Masters and/or PhD students (at least two PhD candidates and at minimum 5 MEng/MSc students supervised to completion).
  • A well-established and nationally-recognised research record supported by publications in high quality peer reviewed journals;

Professor

  • Same as Associate Professor, plus
  • Minimum eight years of experience in a tertiary academic or industry-related institution.
  • A record of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching experience including graduation of doctoral students (at most 5 PhD candidates and 10 MEng/MSc applicants supervised to completion);
  • A well-established and internationally-recognised research record supported by publications in high quality peer reviewed journals.

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES

  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence at a tertiary academic college (at least 6 year).
  • Candidates with teaching and research skills that are complementary to the Department’s needs will be preferred.
  • Work in the same industry or have consulting experience
  • ECSA offers Professional Engineer registrations for candidates;
  • NRF rating/equivalent – Have applied for one.

The annual remuneration package for incumbents will be proportionate to their level of appointment as per UP policy guidelines. UP is a subscriber to BESTMED medical aid and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly Premium.
