Wapsi River Environmental Education Center Spring Cleanup

DIXON (KWQC) – Earth Day is just around the corner and the Wapsi river Environmental Education Center hosted its annual spring cleanup to celebrate it.

About a dozen community members met at the Wapsi river Environmental Education Center to remove unwanted brush and invasive species from the area. The goal was to make way for new green as the weather warms.

Dave Murcia, director of the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center, said that Earth Day is an opportunity for us all to recognize the Earth and its sacredness as well as a reminder to care for it in a more sustainable manner.

Connie Schmitz (a Clinton, IA resident) attended the cleanup with her grandchildren, in hopes of instilling a love for nature and respect in them. Ryan Schmitz and Ellie Schmitz, both grandchildren, are working today towards their junior naturalist merit medals. Ryan earned it today because of all the hard work he did for the environment. Ellie is well on her path to achieving it in a near future.

According to Earthday.org this is the official mission statement for Earth Day 2008.

This is the time to have unstoppable courage and protect our families, our health, and our livelihoods. We must all invest together in our planet.

Susan McPeters is a member of the Friends of the Wapsi Group. She stressed the importance of investing locally in our planet.

She said that you can support them in this way and get more involved. Participating in the annual clean up day, or being a host at the nature center.
