Welridge Academy fosters welcoming environment for new teachers

Many new teachers find themselves in a scary situation. Not only do they have to learn to be comfortable speaking in front learners, but also how to interact with the community and other teachers.

Welridge Academy, based in Weltevreden park, made sure that their new teachers felt at home by showing them that they care and making an effort to include them.

The school did not stop there. They used the opportunity to integrate the new teachers into the school’s culture.

One of the new teachers is Ben Pretorius who joined the school’s senior phase. His remarkable personality and countless stories have made him a popular teacher in his short time at the school.

Northsider was told by Ben that his favorite song to beat morning traffic to school is any country music.

Courtney Law, Grade 5 Register Teacher, is the new English/Social Science teacher. She has already made an impression on the learners and staff with her caring and kind nature.

Courtney told Northsider that the most funnest question she has ever been asked by a learner was, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” The best compliment a learner can give? ‘Youre so active’, said Courtney.

Jade Jacobs, a Grade 2 teacher, has joined the school. She quickly became a friend and confidante to all of the school’s students because of her passion for teaching Grade 2.

Jade claims that her chalkboard and chalk board are her most valuable resources.

Welridge Academy students got to meet Morne Kotze, a new senior phase teacher. He was a great role model for them with his unwavering patience and friendly nature.

Morne shared with Northsider his love for rocking out to The Offspring on his way to school. This helps with traffic.

Robyn Hofmeyr, the school’s Arts and Dance coach, was also welcomed. She will be a mentor and leader for competitive learners.
