In a Historic Vote, Italy Made Protecting the Environment and Animals Part of its Constitution

Imagine this: You go to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster. You’re armed with your popcorn and soda and you start to wonder “Wow, that is a lot!” There are many A-list movie stars and elaborate sets. Some of these we only see for a few seconds. What was the environmental impact of all this?

The film industry is not impressive when it comes to carbon emissions or over-consumption. On average, a film budgeting more than $70 million makes a movie. 2,840 tonnes of CO2. It’s a lot to pay for two hours of experience.

These are the emissions. 51%Mostly, they were connected to transport. This could include transporting expensive and heavy film equipment by truck from one set to the next. This included a four week trip to Barcelona, a cross country road trip in the United States, as well as scouting trips into Peru and Ecuador. There were also sets that were designed and built in England or Hawaii. It doesn’t take a genius mathematician or a computer whiz to realize that this production requires a lot of air and land travel, regardless of its budget of $300 million.

The film industry is also plagued by deforestation. One soundstage can be enough to create a film industry. 4,000 hectaresDeforestation. Lauan, a lightweight plywood, is highly sought after in the industry. It is easy to move, making it ideal for building and relocating sets. The regulations around lauan are not clear. Lauan is usually gathered from rainforests rather than carefully monitored forests, which would help to regulate and monitor excessive lumbar consumption in the film industry.

While the Guide to Green ProductionIn recent years, it was established to reduce industry’s emissions and impact on the environment. It is a guide. Real regulations with real consequences are what the film industry requires.

The Sustainable Production Alliance, made up of several entertainment companies, is a positive development. 2021 was the year that the first carbon emissions report was published.. The information was released under the understanding that studios must first examine their impact in order to make changes.

Netflix has also set a goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2022.

It’s not unusual for an industry or business to push environmental responsibilities on consumers. But when it comes down to the entertainment industry, there is very little to hide. It will be interesting to see how the industry reduces its environmental impact, if at all. We may see a shift in how films are made, or we may be bombarded with yet another form of marketing greenwashing.
