Wolf Administration Awards Funding for Environmental Assessments in Luzerne County

Harrisburg, PASecretary Dennis Davin, Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), announced today that $79,200 was approved through the Industrial Sites Reuse Program to West Hazleton Borough. This will allow West Hazleton Borough the opportunity to conduct an additional environmental evaluation at the former Valmont Plaza Shopping Center located in Luzerne County.

Sec. Davin. These investments support revitalization efforts within our communities and ensure Pennsylvania remains the best place in which to live, work and play.

The former Valmont Plaza Shopping Center is located approximately 1,000 feet east the Valmont TCE (former Valmont Industrial Park), and is a Superfund Site. The main concern is trichloroethene, which has been reported as having impacted groundwater.

The ISRP funds will also be used for soil and groundwater sampling, the installation of four additional monitoring holes, hydrogeological investigation and vapor intrusion investigation.

Patrick McDonnell, Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection, stated that it is crucial to clean up potentially hazardous sites and put them back in the community. The ISRP can be used to encourage the return of these sites to good use, which can help communities reconnect and create opportunities for growth.

The ISRP grants and loans are available to eligible applicants for environmental assessment and remediation. The program promotes environmental cleanup at industrial sites. This will allow for the redevelopment of blighted land.
