Gavin Ellis, co-founder & director, Hubbub

What is Hubbub?

We are an environmental charity. We were established in 2008 to engage people in various sustainability and environmental issues. It’s a broad range of topics that we cover, so packaging is a major part of our work.

How can you engage with consumers?

Since the beginning, design has been a core part of our work. We are always looking for new and innovative ways to communicate, especially in communications. It was not inspiring how information about the environment and recycling packaging was communicated historically, especially in 2014, when we set it up.

You can’t get people’s attention by reciting statistics about why it is right to do so. Instead, appeal to their hearts and minds. To find other routes in. It’s not always about the environmental message you need to convey.

For example, we wanted something to raise awareness of plastics in our oceans. We built a boat from recycled plastic that allows school kids and corporate volunteers to go out fishing for plastic. They then recycle the plastic, some which is recycled into new boats. They not only gain an understanding of the circular economic system, but they also get involved in it, having fun and getting dirty.

We are trying to find innovative ways to convey this point.

What is Hubbubs involvement in the Flexible Plastic Fund?

It’s about communicating to consumers that flexible materials are recyclable. You need to go back to square 1. Put yourself in the shoes and confusion of the average person walking down the street about plastic. There is a lot of negative press about plastic. Many people think that plastics are bad and that everything else is great.

We’ve been trying find simple ways to communicate the message that flexible plastics aren’t recyclable at the curbside or can be recycled at the local supermarket.

We tried to think of a way to explain it, to make it understandable for those who aren’t experts in plastic or recycling.

How does the fund function?

The fund aims to stabilize flexible plastic’s value by working with retailers, manufacturers, and recyclers. The fund is also developing collections in order to increase the supply of recycled material so that the industry becomes more circular.

According to researchThe UK produced more than 309,000 tonnes flexible plastic packaging in 2020, which is 22% of the country’s total plastic waste. There is a lot of potential for improvement, as only 8% of the plastic packaging in the UK is currently recycled. The fund will encourage flexible plastic recycling in the UK to make it financially viable.

In order to increase investment in recycled infrastructure, we need to have the support of consumers in showing that flexible plastic recycling is feasible on a commercial basis.

It would be much easier to promote other materials.

It all depends on the material, but we have a system that recycles plastic. What happens to packaging materials if this system isn’t in place?

The second concern is carbon emissions. Plastic has been chosen for its lightweight and transportability, which helps to reduce carbon emissions. You can switch from a plastic water container to a glass bottle, but it isn’t plastic anymore. However, it is heavier and more expensive to transport.

You may be solving one problem but you are creating another. This life-cycle analysis must be considered when making a decision about switching to plastic from another material.
