Junior Mister Five Hill Nathan Garner felt that the Shred Day event on Saturday was about making an impact for the planet.
Garner said that Earth is the only planet that we have.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, hundreds of residents in the area filed through at a steady speed to dispose of various documents at the Copperas Cove ISD administrative building.
Heart of Texas Shred, based in Elm Mott took the items to dispose them.
The shredding company collected a variety of items, including cardboard, paper, laptops, and cellphones.
Garner, Miss Five Hills Scholarship Program titleholder, hosted the event as part a platform of service that supports Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful.
Garner has partnered up with KCCB as part of his platform for service.
Garner spoke highly of KCCB, stating that he thinks they are a good organization to clean up as much possible. This is why he supported it for his year-long reign.
Garner, who is also Cub Scout in Pack 251 Copperas Cove in Copperas Cove and helps with KCCB, finds it natural to help. Cub Scouts take part in Leave No Trace, which is a set of principles that promotes taking care of the environment.
Garner stated that it is a way to teach people to not litter and not take anything from the natural world.
KCCB awarded Garner a $500 grant recently to launch an adopt-a–park or adopt–a–road program. This is something Garner has been trying to do for a while, according to Wendy Sledd (the programs volunteer director).
The grant will be available until May and will allow KCCB to purchase the supplies necessary to start that program. Sledd stated that the grant was awarded by Youth Service America, Hillshire Farm and Hillshire Farm.
Sledd explained that after he grants his successor, Sledd will continue to work alongside KCCB in order to execute that grant.
Garner will crown his successor at the Copperas Cove Civic Center’s annual pageant on March 26, when Garner will be crowned.
Garner stated that he will likely continue volunteering at KCCB events after his reign.
