Citizens for a Safe & Clean Lake SuperiorCSCLS, a Marquette County non-profit, welcomes Caitlin Sternberg as Director of Outreach and Communication.
Cait, who graduated Magna Cum LaudeNMU’s Environmental Science degree will be awarded in 2021. It is a combination of talent, youth energy, vision, and experience that will help us raise awareness and unite the community to defeat the proposed heavy industrial rocket launch location near. Dennis Ferraro (CSCLS President) said that Lake Superiors shoreline is at Granot Loma.
Cait worked previously as a Great Lakes Climate Corp crew chief with the Superior Watershed Partnership. She partnered with diverse groups such as the National Forest Service and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community to implement environmental projects. Cait also served as a Land Steward for the Rocky Mt. Colorado Conservancy. Ferraro says these are examples of her leadership and organizational skills.
Cait grew up in Chicago and saw the skyscrapers of OHare airport. Cait says that being near Lake Superior has reframed her world views. She is also impressed with the connections people in Marquette County feel to one another, and to the natural environment.
Cait commented on the adverse effects of the rocket rocket launch plan. These include launch site explosions scattering toxic materials, extreme noise, disruptions of wildlife habitat, interferences with nearby popular natural recreational areas, and overall degrading our quality of living.
She hopes to engage people at community events, build ties with members of the community, and involve volunteers to help with CSCLS mission. She also hopes to increase participation of local high school and university students, who she considers very environmentally-oriented.
Ferraro stated that you will see Cait here in Marquette as well as at events with people from Powell Township. These people have been great environmental stewards and have helped to preserve the natural beauty that we all enjoy.
