According to a recent survey* commissioned by SC Johnson, almost half (49%) of UK primary and secondary schoolteachers feel the current quality of education around environment and sustainability is not good enough, with only a fifth (21%) finding the current curriculums easy to use in classrooms. This is because there is more interest in environmental education for youth following the COP26 announcement made by the UK Department for Education. to implement more climate change education in schools.

There is less than 10% of plastic that is recycled worldwide, so there is a need for more education. Education is key to creating the change in behaviours needed to achieve our vision of a world without waste. We are proud that Ocean Generation has partnered with us to support Ocean Academy.

Richard Hill, CEO Ocean Generation, stated that young people (aged 24 and under) account for more than 40% of the world’s population. Their understanding of the Ocean is crucial. These next generation of leaders are the future leaders of the planet. They must first understand the fragility and importance of one our most precious ecosystems. We are delighted to work with SC Johnson, which shares our passion for education on the Ocean plastics crisis, and we look forward growing the Ocean Academy program together.

  • Introduction to the Ocean as a single, interconnected water source supporting all life forms on the planet
  • The Ocean’s multifaceted role, including its role in oxygen, climate control, and carbon regulation.
  • Our Ocean Impact, the challenges it faces and how we can make informed choices to better protect it
  • The Ocean’s future, inspiring young people to make a difference at school and at home.

SC Johnson will provide funding to help the programme reach more UK pupils by 2022. 15,000 students will also be engaged through in-person lessons offered across 75 schools. Ocean Academy is a non-profit organization that aims to address the lack of quality education about the environment. Ocean Generation was founded in 2009 by Jo Ruxton, a film producer.
