Ford’s new study confirms how much cleaner electric cars are in light the heated debate over emissions from battery manufacturing.
A new study has shown that it is possible to do better.Electric vehiclesThese are to protect the environment and prevent emissions. Although similar studies have been conducted, there is still debate about whether some crucial parts of a vehicle’s lifespan were not considered. It has been questioned how environmentally friendly it is to produce large batteries that can power heavy trucks and cars for hundreds of miles. It’s a valid point, and one that has been overlooked in the past.
The best thing about gasoline is its ability to store a lot of energy in a lightweight and manageable form. The downside to burning fuel is the creation of toxic compounds that are directly dangerous to the environment as well as humans. Electric cars, however, emit no emissions. But, this is an oversimplification. Manufacturing, maintenance, and disposal (known as the vehicle cycle) also create emissions.

Large battery packs are required for most EVs. They contain dangerous materials that must first be mined, processed, and assembled. This creates environmental concerns. For the past few years, there has been much debate about which one is worse. Although electric cars are generally considered better than traditional vehicles, a Ford-funded study published in a scientific journal has changed that opinion.Environmental Research LettersThis might help to clarify any confusion. The conclusion is that EVs can reduce greenhouse gases, even when you consider emissions throughout the entire lifecycle. The report did contain some surprises.
Emissions from electric vehicle cycles
The manufacturing, maintenance, and disposal of electric vehicle batteries creates so much CO2 that a gasoline-powered car or truck is far more ‘green’ than a gasoline-powered vehicle. In fact, the emissions from an internal combustion engine (ICE), vehicle’s cycle, were between four and seven tons lower than those from an EV of the exact same class. It’s similar in that solar panels are initially a large financial burden but can be recovered and start saving money over the long-term.
Driving an EV produces less emissions than a car or truck emitting fumes from its exhaust. The new study shows that EVs outperform gas-powered vehicles in terms of emissions. This is in addition to the fact that they last longer than EVs. This big environmental ‘loan,’ which the EV must take into account for the vehiclecycle emissions (manufacturing maintenance and disposal), is paid soon after the EV is installed. Over the course of an EV’s lifetime,Electric vehicleEmissions are reduced by between 28-64 percent compared with an ICE.
