OnNov. 9, the board removed the requirement that masks be worn during outdoor activities.
Administrators considered many factors when recommending the lifting the mandate March 1.
These included declining COVID-19 coronavirus cases in the county, city, and district, an 88.97% vaccination rate in district, and a 71% vaccination in the 43209 zip code. Also, updated guidance from U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Franklin County Public Health and Bexley.

The Feb. 22: City lifted its mask mandateHowever, it allowed the school district to maintain its mandate. Bexley joined other central Ohio districts in adopting a mask-optional setting, including Reynoldsburg, Reynoldsburg and Whitehall.
The resolution states that no one shall be subjected either to harassment or discipline for wearing a mask voluntarily or for not wearing one where it is required or allowed.
Jonathan Baker, a board member, said that he hopes students will respect each other’s decision to wear masks or no.
He said that optional implies neutrality, but not judgment. It is important to remember that mask-shaming should not be replaced with mask-disappointment. Adults can set the tone.
Superintendent Jason Fine indicated that there are still circumstances when masking may be necessary.
Students and staff returning from COVID-positive absences will need to follow Ohio Public Health’s recommended guidance. This states that regardless of symptoms or vaccination status, students and staff must wear a mask from the date of symptomonset or the date of testing if asymptomatic.
Staff and students returning to school after being identified with COVID-19-positive close contacts will need to wear a mask for a period of 10 days.
Alissha Mitchel, a board member expressed concern that the district could have difficulties enforcing COVID-19-related masks for those who have been exposed.
Mitchell stated that my concern is that the honor system can become very slippery.
Fine and Williams stated that the district will work with families and students to ensure safety protocols are adhered to.
Fine stated that we will intervene if there is a student who has been tested positive but isn’t wearing a mask.
Victoria Powers, Board President, said that the transition to a mask-optional environment was the right decision.
Powers stated that she is very optimistic about where the country is at this point. In a mask-optional world, I feel very optimistic that people will continue doing what is necessary to protect one another.
