Gabriel Boric, who was elected last week, pledged to take a strong stance on climate change regulation and environmental regulation.

Chile’s left-leaning President Gabriel Boric signed onto the United Nations Escazu Agreement. This overturns the policy of the previous Chilean government which was against the environmental treaty.

Chile, the world’s largest copper producer, promoted the agreement at first. It is focused on environmental justice in Latin America, the Caribbean and access to information. However, it later declined to sign it because it could create legal uncertainties.

Boric, who replaced Sebastian Pinera, a centre-right president, last week, has promised to take a strong stance on climate change regulation and environmental regulation.

Boric said Friday that the agreement was a significant milestone in the development of a new relationship between state and residents in environmental issues.

Congress must still approve the move.

The Escazu agreement Signed in 2018Many countries in the region including Brazil, Argentina and Mexico joined the agreement in April 2013.

This agreement is intended to help protect the right of every person, past and future, to live in a healthy and sustainable environment.

It also seeks the protection of environmental defenders, access to information and participation in decision-making processes.

Chile has questions about water use by lithium and copper firms, and the effects of mining on glaciers. Access to information about the environment is important.

It was signed by 24 countries within the region and ratified by 12 others.

We are facing the greatest ecological crisis of our time and must work together to overcome it. We won’t be able to succeed alone, said Chile’s Environment Minister Maisa Rojas who is a climateologist.

She stated that the first and only Latin America and Caribbean environmental treaty emerges as a powerful tool for achieving the change we seek.
