Employee development has always been a priority at Chipotle. In 2022, Chipotle plans to increase diversity within its internal pipeline of candidates for all promotions into salaried restaurant support center positions and Field management positions such as Field Leaders, Team Directors and Regional Vice Presidents.

The objectives, which are categorized by Food & Animals, People, and the Environment, can positively or negatively impact the officers’ 2022 annual incentive bonus by up to 15% based on the company’s achievement of these goals.

Food & Animals

Chipotle is committed increasing the number of pounds of organic, local and/or regeneratively raised food used in its restaurants each year. Chipotle plans to purchase at most 57 million pounds organic, transitional, and/or locally-grown ingredients in 2022, an increase of the 55 million it bought in 2021. Due to external crop factors, rice and beans are not included in this goal.

Chipotle, a longstanding advocate for farmers, is supporting the National Young Farmers CoalitionIts movement to advocate for policy changes in the 2023 Farm Bill to facilitate equitable access to as much as one million acres of land for the next generation.

People

Chipotle has always placed employee development as a top priority. Chipotle intends to increase diversity in its internal pipeline for candidates for all promotions into salaried support center positions and Field managers positions, such as Field Leaders and Team Directors, and Regional Vice-Presidents. Chipotle aims to increase diversity in its internal pipeline, which currently has a 60% rate for all promotions into these positions.

Chipotle reached its goals of maintaining racial/gender equity in pay and implemented a program to increase the development of diverse staff members. Chipotle performed a pay equity assessment by an independent third-party and also implemented a robust crew compensation strategy to ensure fair and consistent pay decisions across the organization. It also launched the Leadership Evolution and Development Program (LEAD) in October. This program is designed to give future leaders and critical role-holders additional capabilities. 90% of restaurant managers were promoted last year.

Environment

Chipotle will reduce its Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions by at minimum 5% in 2022. The company announced its wider science-based targets last year in alignment with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). These targets are to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, starting from a base year of 2019. SBTi has classified the approved targets as being in line to a long-term global warming trajectory of 1.5C. Chipotle’s 2021 Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions will be announced in the company’s Sustainability Report update this spring.
