CHIPOTLE ANNOUNCES THE 2022 ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCEGOALS TIED TO EXECUTIVE COMMENSATION

Employee development has always been a priority at Chipotle. In 2022, Chipotle plans to increase diversity within its internal pipeline of candidates for all promotions into salaried restaurant support center positions and Field management positions such as Field Leaders, Team Directors and Regional Vice Presidents.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Feb. 23, 2022/PRNewswire/-Chipotle Mexican Grill NYSE: CMG) today announced its 2022 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)goals tied to executive compensation.The objectives, which are categorized by Food & Animals, People, and the Environment, can positively or negatively impact the officers’ 2022 annual incentive bonus by up to 15% based on the company’s achievement of these goals.

Food & Animals
Chipotle commits to increasing the number of organic, locally, and/or regenerably grown food it serves in its restaurants every year. Chipotle plans to purchase at most 57 million pounds organic, transitional, and/or locally-grown ingredients in 2022, an increase of the 55 million it bought in 2021. This goal excludes rice and beans due to external crop factors.

Chipotle, a longstanding supporter of farmers, is supporting the National Young Farmers Coalitionund its movement to advocate policy change in the 2023 Farm Bill. This would allow equitable access to up 1 million acres of land to the next generation of farmers.

People
Chipotle has always placed employee development as a top priority. Chipotle intends to increase diversity in its internal pipeline for candidates for all promotions into salaried support center positions and Field managers positions, such as Field Leaders and Team Directors, and Regional Vice-Presidents. Chipotle aims to increase diversity in its internal pipeline, which currently has a 60% rate for all promotions into these positions.

Chipotle reached its goals of maintaining racial/gender equity in pay and implemented a program to increase the development of diverse staff members. Chipotle performed a pay equity assessment by an independent third-party and also implemented a robust crew compensation strategy to ensure fair and consistent pay decisions across the organization. In October, it launched the Leadership Evolution and Development program (LEAD), which is designed to increase the capabilities of those who are identified as having potential to succeed in higher-ranking or more critical positions. 90% of restaurant management positions were internal promotions last year.

Environment
Chipotle plans to reduce its Scope 1 (GHG) emissions by 5% by 2022. The company announced its wider science-based targets last year in alignment with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). These targets were set to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 5% by 2022. This will be announced in the company’s Sustainability Report update this spring.
