Colombia and the EU increase cooperation for nature, climate change and sustainable development

Today, Commissioner of Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus SinkeviiusThe EU-Colombia Joint Declaration on Environment, Climate Action and Sustainable Development was jointly signed by Carlos Eduardo Correa, Colombia’s Minister for Environment. The Declaration highlights key shared priorities, such as climate action and biodiversity and ecosystems conservation. They also discuss the fight against deforestation and the fight for deforestation. It was signed during President Ursula’s official visit to Colombia. von der LeyenIvn Duque, President from Colombia, was a part of the exchange on the bilateral agenda, which included sustainability and the implementation the European Green Deal.

President Ursula von der Leyen said:

Colombia is an essential partner in the fight against climate changes and in our actions for the environment. Colombia and the EU will work together on our green agenda, and today’s declaration is an important step in that direction.

Signing the declaration, Commissioner Sinkeviius said:

Only countries from all corners of the globe can achieve global goals if they work together. Today’s agreement between the EU (Columbia) is another step in the direction of the green transformation we need. Both countries want a ambitious global biodiversity agreement at COP15.

This declaration is a significant signal in advance of upcoming milestones within multilateral processes such as the UN Environment Assembly (Nairobi) later this month and the COP15 summit, under the Convention on Biological Diversity later on in the year.You can find the President’s statement here and on EbS.

Frans, Executive Vice-President of the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans A joint high-level meeting on Approaches from the Pact for Sustainability, Green Deal was also held with President Duque. It focused on the EUs green recovery policies in Colombia and the potential for further EU-Colombia cooperation in the global green transition.

Background

Today’s declaration establishes an EU/Colombia Dialogue on Environment and Climate Action and Sustainable Development. This follows a previous milestone in September when the EU and Colombia signed the Memorandum of Understanding regarding an Agenda of enhanced sectoral and political dialogue and cooperation for 10 years.

The Colombian partner, which is a key member of the group, was further strengthened by the visit. The partners will work together to set an example and promote the implementation of international environmental commitments locally and globally.
