DANR approves over $1.6 million for statewide environmental projects– including one in Pierre

The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources approved grants totaling over $1.6million ($1,638,727) for solid waste and water resource management projects, including one in Pierre.

PierreTo purchase a replacement scraper to be used at the Pierre Regional Landfill, a $172,000 Solid Waste Management Program grant has been received. The equipment will be covered by the grant and local funds.

The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will administer the grants. Funds were granted by the DANR State Water Resources Management System, and the Solid Waste Management Program.

Other grant recipients that were announced this week (March 24-2022) are:

  • Custer Fall River Waste Management District has been awarded a $15.500 Solid Waste Management Program grant, to complement a $70,000 grant that was given in June 2021. Grant funds will be used for drainage improvements and landfill cover.
  • Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources was awarded a $1,021,500 State Water Resources Management System grant for the construction of new groundwater observation holes for the DANRs Water Rights Program.
  • Sioux Falls was awarded a $180,000 Solid Water Management Program grant for the purchase of a solid waste shredder to be used at the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill. The equipment will be covered by the grant and local funds.
  • Watertown was awarded a $249 727 State Water Resources Management System grant by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help them update the Watertown and Vicinity Big Sioux Flood Control Study, which was completed in the 1990s.

The State Water Resources Management System (SWRS) identifies large water project that require federal or state authorization. The Legislature allocates actual funding amounts for each large project.

The Solid Waste Management Program offers loans and grants for solid waste disposal, recycling, or waste tire projects. Through the Governors Omnibus Water Funding Bill, the Legislature allocates each year dedicated water and waste funding to the Consolidated Waste and Solid Waste programs.
