District 225 Makes a Move to ‘Mask Recommended’ Environment Immediately

GLENVIEW (IL) While Glenbrook High School District 225 still recommends the wearing of masks on campus, it will no longer require students, staff, or teachers to do so. After Friday’s Illinois Appellate court ruling declaring the appeal regarding school mask mandates to be “moot,” Saturday’s special meeting of the board was held to discuss the matter.

“I want you to know that it is up to the individual to decide whether or not to wear masks. In a letter addressed to parents and shared with Patch, Superintendent Dr. Charles Johns stated that every individual should act in a way that makes them feel safe and secure in our buildings. “While we are still transitioning I ask everyone to remember that there are many students and staff who have health concerns, for whom this transition is difficult. The masks will give them greater comfort during the transition.

According to the district’s recommendations, components of the environment that is recommended for mask-wearing will include:

  • In the athletic training rooms and health offices, you must wear a mask
  • On buses and school transport, you must wear a mask
  • To comply with ADA accommodations for students/staff, mask wearing may be necessary on a limited basis
  • As an additional mitigation measure, masks may be required if there are future cases.
  • For future executive, legislative, and judicial orders, mask wearing may be necessary
  • Students and staff members will not be allowed to go without a mask
  • The District will follow the usual disciplinary procedures to address bullying, harassment, and teasing of staff and students regarding mask-wearing.

Johns stated, “We encourage you take this opportunity to make a decision for your family regarding masking. We recommend that you discuss this with your student so they are clear about your wishes.” “Please understand that staff can’t reasonably expect to enforce or monitor student compliance with family preferences regarding mask wearing. We will remind students to follow their family preferences.

According to the district, all extracurriculars, events, and sports will be subjected to school rules. SHIELD testing will continue for those who want to take part:

  • Testing of Glenbrook Administration Building: 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 pm Monday through Friday
  • GBN testing: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • GBS testing: Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:45 am to 3:30 pm

Johns stated, “While we are still in transition, I ask everyone recognize that there are many students and staff with medical concerns for whom this transition is difficult.” “Wearing masks will give them greater comfort during the transition.”
