Extended Deadline for Saanich Environmental Awards extended to May 3

Saanich has extended deadline for nominations to its annual Saanich Environmental Awards Awards up to May 3.

Saanich has extended deadline for nominations to its annual Saanich Environmental Awards Awards up to May 3.

The awards, which have been presented to more than 170 individuals since 2000, recognize outstanding contributions to protecting the natural environment.

“The legacy of over 20 years of past winners is on display all over Saanich,” said Coun. Karen Harper.

“As we all work through the challenges of the past couple of years it is wonderful to be able to continue to recognize the achievements of these stewards of our community.”

The categories of awards include individuals, businesses, volunteers, youth, sustainability, long-term achievement, and biodiversity conservation.

Past recipients have been involved as environmental educators, creating habitat, research, and removing invasive species. Business awards are given to recognize leadership and practices that promote sustainability.

“As a young adult, I embraced Henry Fiedorowicz’s philosophy: ‘If we all light our own little candle, one day the world will have light,’ ” said Lori James Derry, winner of the 2020 Individual Achievement award.

“Volunteering has provided me with a specific way to do just that: by developing new skills, by stewarding our natural environment, and consequently by contributing to my community with thoughtful actions. By highlighting local resources and grassroots knowledge, we are regionally inclusive, accessible and responsive.”

Anybody whose environmental work has had an effect on Saanich is eligible.

Nominations must be submitted through the online nomination form available at saanich.ca/enviroawards.
