How to make a safe outdoor environment for your cat – East Bay Times

Dear Critter Corner: My cat keeps running in the yard. I think he wants to be outside. Do you think it would be a good idea to take him outside?

Outdoor play is a great way for cats to get mental stimulation and exercise. Let’s make your cat an outdoor sanctuary where they can use all their senses safely and in a fun way. A catio is an outdoor version or enclosure for cats. Catios can be placed on your patio or in your yard. You can also add an above-ground tunnel to the catio. This will allow your cat to enjoy the outdoors, take in fresh air, climb on different perches, and interact with other outdoor creatures (such as birds, squirrels, etc.) from a safe distance.

If a catio is impossible, you might consider training your cat so that they can walk on a collar/harness. There are many styles and fabrics that might be suitable for your cat, depending on their body type. Make sure you measure your cat before purchasing a harness. This will ensure that your cat feels secure and comfortable. It takes only a few sessions to train a cat how to wear a harness. If you’re patient and give your cat tasty rewards, it can take just a few hours. To help your cat become more comfortable with the harness, let them sniff it and then put it on top of their bed. Next, give your cat a treat and let them explore the harness. Then, put the treat in the harness and allow your cat to poke its head through it. Your cat will become more comfortable with the harness, so you can continue rewarding them with tasty treats. The harness will be their first adventure. Next, they will walk around the house with the leash attached. Before you go exploring the yard, take your time.
