Kathleen Theoharides, Energy and Environment secretary, steps down

The Baker administration announced Wednesday that Kathleen Theoharides Energy and Environment Secretary, who has led states’ ambitious efforts to combat climate change since 2019, will be resigning.

Her departure comes as the state continues to work on climate change issues, from lowering carbon emissions in buildings and transportation to greening the grid. This is months before Governor Charlie Bakers term ends. May 6th will be her last day.

Theoharides joined the Baker administration in 2016 as the director for climate and global warming solutions. The Baker administration signed a law in 2016 requiring the state to reduce its emissions by 50 percent by the close of the decade and achieve net-zero emissions for 2050. Theoharides oversees the work towards these goals.

Beth Card, Undersecretary, will take over.
