Hyderabad:KT Rama Rao, Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Administration, asked the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change if they would consider announcing national rankings on net zero, similar to what was done in Ease of Doing Business.

This would encourage States and other stakeholders to work harder towards achieving net zero emissions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already made grand plans and set targets for net zero emission. He suggested that announcing rankings would result in healthy competition among State Governments.

The Minister addressed Friday’s national workshop on Effective Implementation, Monitoring of Forestry Activity with Special Emphasis On Campa.

These could be set up on the lines of Agriculture department’s Krishi Vignan Kendras. There are six types in Telangana alone, but there could be many more. He stressed that the establishment of demonstrative farms would aid in effective training for department personnel.

Minister Rajesh Kumar highlighted the achievements of Telangana Governments in leveraging NREGA money to execute different works, including Multi Level Avenue Plantation.

Before the Central Government introduced drone policies, the Telangana government promoted drone use in different sectors. He pointed out that the drones were used by the Forest department to drop seed balls, and that other departments used them to supply medicines to remote areas as part of the Medicine from Sky initiative.

He specifically wanted the forest department to be more pragmatic in its approach towards development works proposed by State Government’s. Telangana has developed urban infrastructure and also leads in increasing green cover in the country, he said adding” We have to balance all the aspects and there should not be conflict of interest,”.

Appreciating the MAUD Minister’s proposal to announce ranks on net zero performances, Director General of Forests, Chandra Prakash Goyal said the proposal would be taken up with the Ministry and come up with plans.
