Charles Brown, President & CEO of LifeLabs, stated, “We were so happy to earn this award for an additional year; I am proud of our team’s efforts that have supported the goals of sustainability and reductions of environmental impacts.” LifeLabs believes that Canada should be healthier for future generations. This is why we strive to be more sustainable in our environment and to be leaders in sustainability in the health sector.

LifeLabs performs more that 120 million laboratory test every year. To ensure high quality results, almost every process in diagnostic testing depends on clean water. It is an important part our commitment to our communities as well as our environment that we return clean, safe, and usable drinking water. Our Laboratory Operations, Facilities, and Environmental Sustainability team collaborated with AOI water treatment experts in 2020 to replace our Burnaby Reference Lab’s ozone water treatment system. This unique system, which we invented, breaks down sodium azide and removes contaminants before the water is returned to the public.

This is the latest in our ongoing efforts for sustainability, reduction of waste, and kindness to the environment.

Additional information:

  • We conduct annual energy audits and waste audits in order to stay on track. This helps us to continue to reduce our environmental footprint.

  • We have extensive programs for landfill waste diversion and employee electronic recycling.

  • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which we have reported for the past three years, allows us to compare our business operations with Environmental, Social and Economic indicators in order to better understand the overall impact.

  • To increase energy efficiency, we have converted over 2,200 fixtures to light emitting diode (LED), technology in labs across Canada.

  • For our mobile service fleet, we are using hybrid vehicles.
