Ludhiana – The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), has imposed an environment compensation of Rs 35.26 Crores on the local body department. It is taking strict action against violations of solid waste disposal rules and failure to start bioremediation of legacy. The Rs 20.35 million is for solid waste management while the Rs 14.91 crore is for bioremediation.
The environment compensation has been imposed upon Ludhiana municipality corporation at Rs 2.2 Crore
This compensation is valid for the period April 1, 2021 to February 28, 2022.
The local bodies department has been requested to pay the compensation for the environment in the event that the urban bodies are unable. Following the directives of the National Green Tribunal, the environment compensation was imposed.
Ludhiana MC was imposed a Rs 1.8 crore penalty for a period that ran from July 2020 to March 2021. The civic body has not yet cleared this. The MC now has to pay Rs 4 Crore
The garbage piles at the main dump yard on Tajpur Road are a serious environmental problem. Residents in nearby colonies complain about the smelly and thick smoke from the trash, which is fueling the problem. After the termination of the agreement with A2Z waste management, garbage processing at the dump was stopped in February 2021. Civic officials who visited many cities to study solid-waste management have not been able to make any changes.
Officials at the PPCB stated that NGT had, in its orders dated January 10, 2020, and September 17, 2020, directed the imposition of compensation on ULBs for failure to comply with solid waste management rules and bioremediation of legacy. This compensation is calculated in accordance with the NGT’s instructions.
Karunesh garg, PPCB member secretary, said that penalty has been imposed in accordance to NGT orders. The amount will be paid to the local authorities department by the MCs.
The state has 163 ULBs. ULBs with more than 10 Lakh residents will have to pay Rs 10 Lakh per month. This category includes Amritsar and Ludhiana. ULBs with a population of between 5-10 lakhs will be required to pay Rs 5 Lakh per month. This category includes Jalandhar. ULBs with less than 5 lakh population will be kept in the other category. It features 160 ULBs. These ULBs will be subject to Rs 1 lakh penalty per month.
Fines handed out to members of the municipal committees in each district
Other than Ludhiana municipal corp, an environment compensation of Rs 22 Lakh per city has been imposed upon cities like Macchiwara. Payal. Malaud. Sahnewal. Samrala. Raikot. Mullanpur Dakha.
