Pro-environment advocacy group urges gov’t, LGUs to invest on digital technologies – Manila Bulletin

The Philippine Business for Environmental Sustainability has urged the national governments and local government units (LGUs), to invest in digital technologies. This would ensure economic recovery as well as environmental sustainability.

Engr. Felix Vitangcol (convenor of the Philippine Business for Environmental Sustainability) explained that climate change’s adverse effects are now a huge challenge for all countries. He cited the evidence of extreme weather events such as stronger typhoons.

Only one needs to look at the impact of the collapse of power and telecommunications on rescue and rehabilitation efforts following Typhoon Odette in December. If we fail to optimize digital technologies, we will only widen social divides and expose the most vulnerable among us to economic and environmental risks,” said Vitangcol.

Vitangcol explained that digital technologies can help industries become more environmentally-friendly by reducing waste and pollution. This will also result in higher efficiency and competitiveness, which will allow for growth and expansion as well as more jobs.

He cited the case of Globe Telecom’s ongoing shift to renewable energy to power their key facilities.

This has been a great partnership between the government and the private sector. It has seen a shift in capital funds to tangible, measurable projects towards this end. Through environmental, social and governance (ESG)-based interventions, they have shown their capability to expand peoples access to education, proper and well-informed health-care, and immediate financial support,” said Vitangcol.

“Sustainability values initiatives are now integrated into business cultures especially in big enterprises. This is a sign that industry captains are putting their money where their mouth is, by committing substantial resources to long-term environmental concerns,” he added.

As such, he stated that the government must match private sector commitments to ensure that no one is left behind.

Vitangcol stated that access to the best technology does not guarantee economic prosperity or sustainability. Access to technology should be available to as many Filipinos possible, and they should also learn how to use it. These tools can help you live a better lifestyle. Beyond obtaining the latest innovations, people should be able to use them to serve their own needs,” Vitangcol said.

Platforms and apps serve a purpose for individuals, communities and organizations. They also improve their well-being. We now have a valuable tool for helping us prepare for the economic, social and physical effects of natural disasters. Technology does not have to come at the expense of turning our back on the environment; on the contrary, it helps us become more conscientious stewards of the environment, for the benefit of all,” he added.
