Recycling and reducing food waste can make the environment more sustainable.

TAMPA FL. Recycling is one way that everyone can reduce their pollution footprint year round. Experts suggest that we all can recycle more by using our own bags at the grocery store and reusing plastic water bottles.

ABC Action News spoke with Erin Levine of World Centric. The company sells everyday items made from 100% recycled materials. Levine stated that it is important for customers to be aware of what is and what isn’t recyclable. She said that throwing greasy pizza boxes and plastic grocery bag in those blue bins amounts as wish cycling.

If people want to do right and don’t know where to dispose an item, they will often put it in the recycling bin. In the hope that it will be recycled. Levine explained that wish cycling is a form of wish fulfillment and may not apply to all items.

Families should reduce food waste. A Florida family of four will spend approximately 16-hundred Dollars a year on food waste. This food ends up in a local landfill, where it produces greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide that contribute to global warming.

Daniel Gallagher is the recycling Coordinator for Hillsborough County. He stated that food waste is the biggest component of garbage collected curbside in Hillsborough County. He said that this is not a local problem and that there are solutions.

Gallagher explained that food waste is a major problem that has an impact on the world. By taking simple steps such as meal prep, auditing your food waste and composting, feeding people and feeding animals, we can solve this issue that is affecting us all around the world.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set a national goal to reduce food waste by half by 2030.
