Renault CEO Says Mandating EVs Too Soon Could Hurt The Environment

Luca de Meo, chief executive of Renault, has warned against an automotive industry that is rushing to introduce new products. all-electricNoting that it could have unintended effects on the environment, lineups are important.

Speaking at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit, London, de Meo stated that the French car manufacturer is committed electric vehicles. However he also noted that EVs have not yet reached price parity to ICE vehicles and may not for quite some time due rising raw material prices.

First, let me say that Renault is obviously committed to EVs. He said that we started very early in this endeavor and believe that EVs and hydrogen can be a viable solution for some applications. But if you look at the data, it is apparent that combustion-engine sales – including hybrids – have yet to reach their peak. There are many challenges that must be considered from a variety of perspectives, including ecological, financial, and societal.

De Meo stated that electric vehicles are suitable for 85 percent of their typical usage but not for longer trips, such as two to three times a year. Renault’s boss also said that the lifetime CO2 emissions from EVs must be carefully considered. Autocar notes.

Then there is the lifetime CO2 – the cradle-to-grave figure – for a car, the answer to which is not so obvious. These measurements can be used to determine if hybrids or alternative fuels are cleaner than EVs. The financial accessibility of EVs is another important factor. Price parity is expected to be around 2025. However, this could have been affected by raw material inflation.

De Meo believes, in addition, that strict confidentiality is essential. EVMandates that are implemented in markets around world could harm the environment by cutting investment in improving existing fuel technologies and combustion engines.

Renault sees a future in ICE and hybrid cars over the next years. However, it is investing heavily into electric vehicles and unveiled the first electric vehicle last September.
