Climate changeScientists are alarmed by a shocking marine discovery off New Zealand’s coast.
Hordes Sea spongesThey were spotted being bleached white instead of their normal, healthy brown colour.
James Bell, a marine biology professor, made the disturbing discovery under the sea at the Doubtful Sound and Breaksea Sound fjords of Fiordland while on a trip last month.
After a few similar reports from colder waters around the globe, the Victoria University of Wellington academic claimed that this was the first mass bleaching of sea sponges in New Zealand.
He shared his story The Guardian: “This just highlights the kind of climate crisis that we’re facing. There are so many species around New Zealand and we don’t know what their thermal tolerances are.
“Our initial estimates indicate that at least hundreds of thousands of sponges have been bleached. But, it is possible that there are many more.”

Mr Bell stated that 95% of the sea sponges in some areas were bleached.
New Zealand’s sponge garden ecosystem plays a critical ecological role in creating habitats and carbon for fish and other species.
“This could be the start of something really really bad for other ecosystems or the entire ecosystems in Fiordland, that’s kind of where it potentially goes – it’s pretty depressing,” Mr Bell added.
Scientists believe the worrying trend is due to rising sea temperatures that acidify oceans, and cause damage to reefs.
2021 was the hottest year for the oceans in the world.
Rob Smith, an Oceanographer at University of Otago told RNZFiordland’s ocean temperature is up to 5C warmer than normal.
“What we’ve seen this summer is the strongest marine heatwave on the west coast of the South Island in 40 years,” he said.
Bell stated that further research was needed to confirm the connection between rising temperatures, sea sponge bleaching and sea-spray bleaching. However researchers claim they have seen a “very strong relationship” between the two.
