SD Campus named National Green Ribbon School for Environmental Efforts

St. Martin of Tours Academy La MesaFriday was designated a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon school in recognition of its efforts to reduce its environmental impact.

Only four California schools were included on the national Green Ribbon Schools list, while 27 others were included. Nationally, five school districts and four postsecondary institutions were also recognized.

These honors are given to schools and institutions that reduce their environmental footprint, lower utility costs, and work towards sustainable education.

U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools awardees have raised standards for sustainability, healthy and secure school environments, hands-on learning experiences that link students of all ages with the world around their world, U.S. Sec. of Education Miguel Cardona stated in a statement. We have the opportunity to invest in sustainable practices to improve student learning, health, well-being, and ventilation as we recover from the pandemic.

Tony Thurmond, California Superintendent for Public Instruction, said that honorees had maintained sustainable practices through the unprecedented challenges posed by the global pandemic.

He said that their flexibility and ingenuity allowed them to create innovative models for indoor air quality, well-designed outdoor classrooms and meaningful environmental education. I want to mention that more than half our award-winning sites are located in the most need communities of the state.

Other schools that were recognized in the state were Katella High school in Anaheim, Orange County; Altamont Creek Elementary in Alameda County; and Suisun Valley in Solano County.
