PISCATAWAY, N.J., Dec. 20, 2021Signia, the hearing aid innovator, today published a new study about the environmental benefits of rechargeable hearing devices.
Signia is the only company in the hearing aid market to have completed a scientific life cycle assessment (LCA), which compares the lifetime environmental impact of rechargeable and nonrechargeable hearing aids. The assessment indicates: compared to non-rechargeable Signia AX, the rechargeable Signia Augmented Xperience (AX) reduces the total environmental impact* by 65%, which is an average of reduced impacts of 18 environment categories, including climate change (57%), fossil depletion (52%), human toxicity non-cancer (76%), land use (87%), marine ecotoxicity (78%), etc. A user who uses two hearing aids can save over 100 batteries each year.
Signia is committed in improving our environmental footprint. The battery is the largest lever we have identified. We want our customers aware of how easy it can be to positively impact the environmental impact by switching to rechargeable hear aids,” says Frank NaumannSignia’s Senior Director of Global Innovation, who was responsible for the LCA study.
Signia is committed to sustainability. Signia’s LCA results are a clear indicator of this and are part of a series that Signia has either in motion or is ready to launch in 2022.
The study shows that for non-rechargeable hearing aids, the battery solution (i.e., production, distribution, and disposal of batteries)contributes to more than 80% of the total environmental impact.* On average, for a Signia rechargeable hearing aid, the battery solution (i.e., production, distribution, and disposal of batteries) contributes to only about 5% of the total environmental impact.* Electricity demand for charging contributes on average another9% of the total environmental impact,* but the difference is still significant.
Signia offers a wide range of rechargeable hearing aids that can be used for up to 61 hours on one charge.
We now have solid evidence that rechargeable hearing aids are better for the environment. They are also very practical and easy to use. You can just put them in the charger at night, and they will be ready for use all day. It doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice quality or comfort to reduce your environmental footprint. Signia empowers its wearers to make a conscious choice for the environment, and take action to live the Signia brand-promise to enhance human performance,” says Samy Leuriette, Signia’s Global Head of Brand.
Signia offers a wide range of rechargeable products that cover all forms. Signia Active X and Insio Charge&Go X are In-The-Ear solutions. Pure Charge&GoT AX and Styletto X are receiver-in-canal devices. Then, there are the Behind-the Ear solutions, Motion Charge&Go X or Motion Charge&GoP X.
Ramboll performed the study. The accredited certification body TV NORD audited the results. The study conforms to ISO 14040/44 standards. The assessment report is kept on file.

* Total environmental impact: The total environmental impact throughout the life cycle of the hearing aids, including raw materials, production, transportation, usages, and disposal phases. The total environmental effect includes 18 impact categories. Climate change, fine particulate matter, fossil depletion and freshwater eutrophication are all included in the total environmental impact. All statements are based the underlying functional units of the assessment. “Use two hearing aids for 12 hours per day, with an average use profile over a period 5.5 years in EU28.”
