DANR Announces More than $1.6 Million for Statewide Environmental Projects

 

PIERRE, S.D. – Today, the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) announced the Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved $1,638,727 in grants for solid waste and water resource management projects.

 

“I am pleased to announce this financial assistance is available,” said DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts. “These grants will result in solid waste facility improvements and enhanced water resource management, helping protect our environment and natural resources.”

 

The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will administer the grants.

 

Funds were awarded from DANR’s State Water Resources Management System and the Solid Waste Management Program to the following:

 

Custer Fall River Waste Management DistrictTo supplement the $70,000 grant in June 2021, a $15.500 Solid Waste Management Program grant was received. Grant funds will be used to cover landfills and improve drainage.

 

Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources received a $1,021,500 State Water Resources Management System grant to develop new groundwater observation wells for DANR’s Water Rights Program.

 

PierreTo purchase a replacement scraper to be used at the Pierre Regional Landfill, a $172,000 Solid Waste Management Program grant has been received. The equipment will be paid for with local funds and the grant. 

 

Sioux FallsA $180,000 Solid Water Management Program grant was awarded to purchase a solid-waste shredder for the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill. The equipment will be paid for by the grant as well as local funds.

 

WatertownA $249,727 State Water Resources Management System grant was awarded to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help them update the Watertown & Vicinity Big Sioux Flood Control Study that was completed in the 1990s.  

 

The State Water Resources Management System (SWRS) identifies large water project that require federal or state authorization. The Legislature determines the actual funding amount for each large water project.

 

The Solid Waste Management Program offers loans and grants for solid waste disposal, recycling, or waste tire projects. The Legislature annually appropriates dedicated water and waste funding for the Consolidated and Solid Waste programs through the Governor’s Omnibus Water Funding Bill.

 

The board approved the funding at today’s meeting in Pierre.
