Station upgrades aim at improving firefighters’ work environment

The Arlington County Board will approve a contract of up to $1.37million for renovations and upgrades to fix county fire stations on February 12.

The project is intended to make the facilities available for a fourth shift. It will include modifications to kitchens. The project involves Fire Stations 1, 2, 5, 6, 6 and 9.

Bennett Groups bid was deemed responsible for the lowest amount. Another bidder came in lower, but did not meet requirements of having completed two previous fire station projects.

The total project budget is $3.24 Million. It is designed to help Arlington County implement a Kelly Day schedule for fire stations.

Named after the 1930s mayor, Kelly Day schedule gives firefighters a day of rest in the middle a rotation to reduce their work hours.
