Teens work together to make environmental change

TUCSON (KGUN), This Spring is dedicated to the care of our planet for nine high school students from Pima County.

Ali Soland, 17 years old, stated that it was important to take good care of your home.

“Climate Change is a growing problem. Samantha Miranda, 16, said that it is crucial for the community to get involved and educated.

All were selected to participate in the event. Pima County Department of Environmental QualityNew Youth for Blue Skies program. They have partnered with the Ironwood Tree ExperienceTo educate teens on environmental issues and why their voices and actions are important.

“We live in Southern Arizona, which has many climate problems. Some of those are related the heat and sun that grows every year. Rebecca Perez, from the Ironwood Tree Experience, said that emissions are also a concern.

They want teens to be role model for the next generation and to make environmental conscious decisions every single day.

Natalie Shepp, Senior Program Manager at Pima County Department of Environmental Quality, stated that they want them to inspire others to make positive changes in their community, to drive less, and to think more about their impact on climate change, air pollution, and the environment.

That started Sunday with taking public transport together. It was a small step that could lead to a significant change.

Jesus Mendoza, 15, said that it was important for youth to get involved in climate change issues as they are the future of the community.

Soland stated, “I’m really hoping just to spread awareness and do whatever else I can to make it a better home.”
