US Tests USMCA’s Environment Chapter On Poaching Spat

By Jennifer Doherty (February 10, 20, 22 at 5:25 EST) — According to a Thursday announcement, the Biden administration has increased pressure on Mexico for conservation laws to save one of the most endangered species on the planet. The Biden administration relied on the criteria in the United States – Mexico-Canada Agreement to do so.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative’s request for consultations — the first of its kind under the USMCA’s environment chapter — aims to save the vaquita porpoise, of which only approximately 10 remained on Earth as of August 2021, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. The USTR requested consultations with Mexico’s government.
