ZIMBABWE will be participating in the Fifth Session United Nations Environment Assembly, which runs from today to March 2, 2022 in Nairobi Kenya.

The theme of the event will be usedTo reach the Sustainable Development Goals, Strengthening Actions For Nature(SDGs).

After previous sessions which were held virtually due the COVID-19 pandemic in 2004, this years session will be held face-to face.

The United Nations Environment Assembly is the highest-ranking body that makes decisions about the environment.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Tourism Industry stated that Zimbabwe will have Mangaliso Nadlovu, Environment minister, and representatives from the Environment Management Agency.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known by Rio 2012 (or Rio+20), established the UNEA. Since then, UN member state environment ministers have met in Nairobi, Kenya, every two years.

It meets bi-annually to establish priorities for global environmental policy and to develop international environmental laws. Read the ministry statement.

They indicated that they expected some resolutions at the meeting to include strategicdirection to member countries on best environmental practices and strategies to be implemented in their countries in accordance with global positions.

These meetings are taking place at a moment when Zimbabwe is closing consultations on the review of the Environmental Management Act (20:27), which is the main piece of legislation governing environmental governance in the country.

During this time, the UNEA-25.2 meeting will be followed on March 3-4 by a special session at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEASS).

The session will be dedicated to the 50th anniversary celebrations of UNEP’s creation in 1972.
