Ghazipur fire – Delhi Environment minister asks pollution committee to impose Rs 50 Lakh fine on EDMC

Wednesday’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai directed the DPCC (Delhi Municipal Corporation) to impose a Rs 50 lakh fine on East Delhi Municipal Corporation. He also instructed the DPCC officials responsible for the massive fire at Ghazipur landfill two days ago to be prosecuted by the DPCC.

Rai stated at a press conference that it was also decided to plan a campaign for the prohibition of open burning of garbage and the setting of fires at landfill sites.

“We had asked Delhi Pollution Control Committee for a fact-finding document. They submitted a detailed report today, which points out the carelessness of the municipal corporation.

“The report speaks about the slow pace of biomining legacy waste at the site. Rai stated that only 21 trommels are being used in place of 25.

The anti-smog guns deployed at the site are not working. Only 17 of the 24 CCTV cameras that were installed to monitor such fires are working, he stated.

Minister said that the construction of a barrier wall to prevent unauthorized people from entering the landfill is still not complete.

“In view of such shortcomings, the DPCC is being asked to impose a penalty of Rs 50 lakh upon the municipal corporation and take actions against officials responsible,” he said.

“We also decided to convene an high-level meeting with departments concerned on April 4, to plan a campaign for stopping the burning of waste and causing fires at landfills,” he said.
