New edition of the Manual on Human Rights and the Environment

The Steering Committee for Human Rights, (CDDH), of Council of Europe published the document. 3rd edition of its Manual on Human Rights and the Environment.

The updated Manual recognizes that the deep connections between environment and human rights have become more obvious and explicit over the years. It aims to help people understand this relationship. It examines the contribution of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Social Charter to environmental protection at national levels. This is done through the evolving caselaw of the European Court of Human Rights as well as the conclusions and decisions of European Committee on Social Rights. An appendix provides examples of good national practices from member states.

The CDDH is currently working to prepare a draft Committee of Ministers recommendation on human right and the environment. This will be followed up by a feasibility analysis on additional instruments, including a binding one.
