Today is the start of the fifth session at United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya.

The UN Environment Assembly is the world’s top environmental decision-making body. The United Nations Environment Assembly is a gathering of representatives from 193 UN Member states, companies, civil society, as well as other stakeholders, every two years.

The assembly regards nature as critical to achieving goals of the unanimously agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda aims to end poverty and conflict, create fair and inclusive societies, and protect the planet and its natural resources.

Other important topics at the Assembly include chemical waste management, nitrogen management, nature based solutions and biodiversity, as well as the circular economy. A Leadership Dialogue on the theme of ‘Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals will also be held alongside multilateral environmental accords.

The Assembly will be discussing the creation a negotiating committee international to start work on a global, legally binding, and comprehensive agreement to combat the effects of plastic pollution. The world’s plastic pollution crisis means that the highest-level, society-wide discussions could be the most important global environmental development since 2015’s Paris Climate Agreement.
